In the Big Ten architectural style

Readers who attended Northwestern University (and I know there are at least three -- no, four of you out there) will see a familiar aesthetic in the buildings of Indiana University. Visiting the main campus in Bloomington last week, I noticed a striking resemblance between IU and my alma mater. This is not a huge surprise since the campuses are just 240 miles apart, were both founded by Protestants, and were built in approximately the same era from what were likely the same limestone quarries.

On second thought, maybe it's just my photography that's all starting to look the same.

I love Northwestern's campus. I didn't go to college there but I went to their high school engineering program one summer and lived on campus with a dorm room right off the beach looking out on the lake. I always go walking/running there when I go home to visit family. I also used to go hang out at the radio station some Sat. nights during Fast n Loud, their punk rock show. They'd let just about anyone play live on that show and I'd tag along when my friends' bands played. Lots of good memories (and plenty of shenanigans) at that campus.

I was a rock DJ at WNUR (never on Fast 'n' Loud, though, which incidentally is still on Saturday nights). As far as I know, my FCC operator's license is still on file at Annie May Swift Hall.

Man, I'd love to spend my days in Deering right now. Not so sure I'd trade the 60 degree weather for the privilege, though -- you think we could mix Gothic style architecture with Mission and adobe??

... and did you go -into- Willard??

That campus looks so much prettier than I remember it, of course I spent all my time in buildings that were probably built in the 1970s.

I was in fact a DJ on 'fast n loud' in 1990/91 and 1991/92! Those were great times at Annie Mae Swift hall...back when NUR was in the basement. The 'new' studio is fantastic. If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out!
